BRC215 - OVERSEAS NURSING PROGRAMME

Student Information for the Overseas Nursing Programme in the UK
All nurses trained outside of the United Kingdom are required to complete a specific 20 day “Protected Learning” programme with an approved higher education provider, along with a prescribed length of supervised practice (if any) before being accepted for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

What is Supervised Practice?
It is for nurses who have been asked by the NMC to undertake a supervised practice placement for between three to nine months. The purpose of the supervised placement is to enable the practitioners to become familiar with the NMC code of conduct and legal issues related to professional practice in the United Kingdom. In addition, it assesses and develops the clinical, communication and linguistic skills required by the NMC.

Course Overview
This programme has been designed in response to the changes required by the NMC for the preparation of overseas trained nurses to be registered with the NMC in the UK. This course is studied at level 2.
Total credit gained upon successful completion – 15. Our course is linked with Kingston University and St George’s University of London. You will work in a nursing home approved by the University. The classroom teaching and reflective learning are provided by British Royal College in conjunction with the University. The University validates the final professional assessment.

Duration
Three to nine months or as directed by NMC.

Start Date
Alternative 3rd month.

Attendance
Twenty contact days spread over 12 weeks plus the time specified by the NMC for clinical practice and administration.

Number of Protected Learning Days
Phase 1: Orientation (five days) Phase 2: Supervised practice (six days) Phase 3: Achieving competencies (seven days) Phase 4: Consolidation (two days)

Venue
British Royal College in association with Kingston University and St George’s University of London.

Fees
Available on request and are subject to change.

Course Aims
The aim of the course is based on the NMC five principles as follows:

1. To ensure safe and effective practice in the interest of public protection.

2. To enable applicants who meet the initial requirements to transfer skills and experience to the United Kingdom setting.

3. To enable applicants to be assessed as being at least as competent as any newly qualified, registered, United Kingdom-trained nurses.

4. To enable supervised practice to be delivered over variable time frames, as determined by the NMC, based on the applicants’ training and experience. Also, to ensure that applicants meet the practice requirements for registration.

5. The course will be subject to the NMC quality assurance processes.

Learning and Assessment
A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be adopted to meet the needs of nurses with different levels of experience. Approaches will include lectures, seminars, problem-based learning and critical reflection. Nurses’ development on the course will be assessed by written work specific to level 2 academic criteria and the assessment of competence in clinical practice. Nurses will be supported throughout the course with academic tutorial sessions.

Learning will be assessed through both course work and the level of competence shown in practice. The methods chosen will enable students to demonstrate that they have met level 2 criteria. A range of assessments have been chosen to aid nurses to perform to the best of their ability. These assessments relate theory to practice since this course is clinically based with the aim of producing practitioners fit for practice.

Theory
Direct contact - 56 hours. Self-directed/guided/personal study - 19 hours.

Clinical Practice
Direct contact hours will be dictated by the NMC decision letter, which each applicant must have. The nurse must be working in a healthcare environment, which has been audited successfully by a university. This is required for the nurse to gain experience and successfully complete the proficiencies required by the course. Within the practice environment each nurse will have a qualified mentor in order to support his or her completion of the proficiencies.

Assessment Strategy
One assessment consisting of two components: practice competencies and theory.

Theory Components
A reflective account of one episode of practice (1,000 words) supported by three relevant reading logs.

Practice Components
Achievement of five specific practice competencies.
Major Categories of Assessment
Theory is 20% and practice is 80%.
